Make a list. Make a list of all the items you want in your new kitchen. There will be things that your current kitchen does not offer such as corner or door storage or a larder unit, perhaps you need a breakfast bar or island unit? Have a look at our storage solutions page for some useful items. |
Draw a plan. Draw the rough shape of your kitchen, and then get a tape measure. Measure the position of everything, doors, windows and radiators. Transfer this drawing onto graph paper for a more accurate representation. |
Dishwasher. If you have a dishwasher it is best situated
next to the sink. |
The sink. Try to position your sink near a window so that you have a view, if your window opens inwards then think carefully about the position of the taps. |
Plan your layout. Is your kitchen a galley, L shaped, U shaped or are the units in a straight line? Decide where you would like your units, sink cooker and other appliances. |
The useful drawer. A drawer placed next to the cooker is probably the most useful drawer in the kitchen. Having everything close at hand makes all the difference. |
The working triangle. The sink, cooker and fridge form what is known as the working triangle, so you can move freely between them. |
Corners. Avoid placing appliances or drawers in corners.
We have many ingenious storage solutions that make the best use of corner space. |
Free space. In a galley kitchen you will need at least 120cm of space between the two sides. If you have a table leave about 120cm of free space around it. Leave at least 60cm between the hob and the sink and at least 40cm either side of the hob. |
